Should You Think Before Asking AI? New Research Suggests Timing May Change How Creative Your Work Appears

Here is an experiment worth trying.
The next time you have a creative problem, don’t immediately open an AI assistant.
Think first.
Write down three ideas.
Then bring in AI.
That tiny change in workflow may matter more than it appears.
Research published in the 2026 Academy of Management Proceedings examined how people evaluate creators depending on when AI enters their creative process.
Across three preregistered experiments involving 940 participants, the researchers found that creators who incorporated AI recommendations at the beginning of their process were perceived as less creative than those who incorporated AI later.

Why?
Participants perceived early AI users as demonstrating less effort and authenticity.
Interestingly, when creators showed that they had developed and transformed AI recommendations rather than merely implementing them, much of that negative effect was reduced.

That’s fascinating.
Because the issue wasn’t simply:
Did you use AI?
It was:
What did you do with it?
AI at the Beginning
Imagine a designer receives a challenge:
“Design a chair for people living in tiny apartments.”
Their first action is asking AI:
“Give me ten innovative chair designs.”
Immediately, the machine establishes the possibility of space.
The designer begins reacting to AI-generated concepts.
Psychologically, observers may perceive the machine as providing more of the original creative direction.
Human First, AI Second
Now imagine another designer.
Before touching AI, she sketched several ideas.
One chair folds into a wall.
Another contains storage.
Another transforms into a desk.
Only then does she ask AI:
“Challenge these concepts. What limitations haven’t I considered?”
AI becomes an amplifier rather than the originator.
The resulting product might involve exactly the same amount of AI.
Yet the creative process feels fundamentally different.
This Connects With Other 2026 Research
The finding fits into a broader emerging psychology of human AI creativity.
A May 2026 study in Frontiers in Psychology examining 381 employees found that different patterns of generative-AI use were associated with different forms of creativity: exploratory AI use was more strongly associated with radical creativity, while exploitative use was more strongly associated with incremental creativity.
Frontiers
An August experimental study involving university students has also examined whether simple one-round AI interaction produces different creative outcomes from deeper multi-round collaboration.

We’re moving beyond the simplistic question:
“Does AI make people creative?”
The better question is:
“Which human-AI workflows encourage creativity?”
Protect the First Five Minutes
One practical approach could be remarkably simple.
When facing a creative challenge, protect your first five minutes from AI.
Ask yourself:
What do I think?
What feels unusual?
What would I try?
What assumptions am I making?
What if the obvious answer is wrong?
Write those thoughts down.
Then, bring in artificial intelligence.
Now, the AI has something distinctly yours to work with.
AI Can Become the Second Brain Without Becoming the First Thought
There is enormous value in AI brainstorming.
It can produce alternatives humans might overlook.
It can challenge assumptions.
It can introduce perspectives from unfamiliar disciplines.
It can identify weaknesses.
But perhaps we shouldn’t surrender the first cognitive move automatically.
The blank page is uncomfortable.
That discomfort may have value.
Transformation Matters
The Academy of Management research contains another important lesson.
People reacted more favourably when creators elaborated on AI recommendations rather than simply using them.

That points toward a useful creative principle:
Don’t merely accept.
Transform.
Question it.
Combine it.
Reject parts.
Add experience.
Introduce another discipline.
Turn the suggestion upside down.
Make the final idea difficult to trace back to any single source because it has genuinely passed through your own thinking.
The New Creative Skill
AI means idea generation itself is becoming cheap.
You can request 100 ideas before breakfast.
But choosing, transforming, and developing ideas remains demanding.
Perhaps creativity in the AI age becomes less about:
“Can you generate something?”
And increasingly about:
“Can you recognise what is worth developing?”
That’s judgement.
judgement comes from experience, knowledge, curiosity, and taste.
Final Thoughts
Using AI does not make someone uncreative.
Avoiding AI does not automatically make someone creative.
The interesting territory lies between those extremes.
The emerging evidence suggests how we collaborate with AI matters.
So perhaps the best creative workflow begins with a surprisingly old-fashioned instruction:
Think.
Then, ask the machine.
Then think again.
