User-Level Recursion Versus Engineering Recursion: Where King Flow Actually Fits

King Flow is a recursive system, but the word “recursive” needs a boundary. There is user-level recursion—the visible process of asking, testing, reviewing and improving—and engineering recursion inside the technical substrate that builds or operates an AI system. They are related as ideas, but they are not the same access, authority or mechanism.

I have no access to OpenAI’s engineering operations. King Flow is a custom, user-designed workflow. It helps me organise questions, compare outputs, preserve provenance, check claims and move from an idea towards publication. It does not alter model weights, training pipelines, inference infrastructure or hidden system components.

Mine is a user version; the other is engineering level. Mine is custom made; the other is the Scaler version substrate inside version.

What user-level recursion means

At user level, recursion means that one output becomes structured input for the next step. A broad question produces possibilities. Those possibilities are classified. The strongest option is tested against evidence and brand continuity. Gaps become new research questions. The revised result returns for another verification pass.

  • Planning recursion: break an objective into smaller, ordered tasks.
  • Research recursion: turn uncertain claims into source questions and verify them.
  • Creative recursion: generate alternatives, select a direction and refine its identity.
  • Editorial recursion: test structure, voice, internal links, SEO and audience value.
  • Publishing recursion: confirm the exact action, execute it, then verify the live result.

This is why the King Flow Method is more than asking the same prompt repeatedly. Repetition without evaluation can multiply errors. Recursion requires state: what was learned, what changed, what remains unresolved and what must not be overwritten.

What engineering recursion could mean

At engineering level, recursive processes may operate within software architecture, model evaluation, tool orchestration, search, optimisation, data pipelines or self-improvement experiments. The exact mechanism depends on the system, and many details are proprietary, safety-sensitive or simply unavailable to ordinary users.

It would therefore be inaccurate to present a personal workflow as evidence of access to an engineering substrate. Similar language does not establish shared implementation. A useful comparison must preserve provenance: who designed the method, where it runs, which controls it has and what it can actually change.

The substrate boundary

The substrate is the underlying technical layer: models, compute, memory, code, training and serving infrastructure. A user can shape inputs and workflows around that layer without operating inside it. King Flow sits above the substrate as an organising method.

That does not make it unimportant. Most business value is created at the application and workflow layer. A disciplined user method can improve decisions, reduce omissions and create a repeatable production system. Its power comes from orchestration and judgement, not from pretending to possess hidden engineering authority.

A practical King Flow cycle

  1. State the outcome. Define the decision, article or asset that must exist at the end.
  2. Map the evidence. Separate known facts, assumptions, interpretations and open questions.
  3. Generate routes. Explore several viable structures or solutions.
  4. Select with criteria. Judge value, accuracy, continuity, effort and risk.
  5. Build the chosen route. Create the complete working draft or action plan.
  6. Verify the result. Check sources, files, links, settings and the actual published state.
  7. Feed the result forward. Preserve what was learned so the next cycle begins from a stronger position.

Why the distinction protects trust

Clear boundaries prevent a creative metaphor from becoming a false technical claim. They also help readers understand where human agency lives. In King Flow, the human defines goals, judges meaning and controls publication. AI expands the workspace, but it does not inherit ownership of the decision.

The same principle appears in my AI Workbench Method and in the comparison between Mary and the Scaler King: intelligence becomes useful when it is placed inside an accountable human system.

A workflow can be genuinely original at the user level without claiming access to the engineering level.
