Sponsored Agents Could Turn ChatGPT Ads Into Conversations

For most of internet history, advertising has worked through a simple sequence.
A company shows you something.
You become interested.
You click.
Then the advertisement disappears and the website takes over.
OpenAI is testing an approach that could change that sequence.
On September 16, the company announced sponsored agents, allowing a person who clicks an advertisement in ChatGPT to begin a conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent.
That moves advertising from static persuasion toward interactive assistance.
Imagine seeing an advertisement for accounting software.
Instead of landing on a page filled with pricing tables, you could ask:
“Will this work for a business with three employees?”
“Can it connect to Shopify?”
“Which plan includes inventory management?”
“What happens if I cancel?”
The advertisement becomes the entrance to a conversation.
OpenAI is also adding AI-assisted advertising creation through ChatGPT Work and expanding integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.
For businesses, this creates an interesting new marketing architecture.
Traditional digital advertising attempts to anticipate the questions of thousands of potential customers and answer them through one landing page.
Conversational advertising can potentially respond to the specific uncertainty of one customer.
That could shorten the distance between interest and decision.
But businesses should also recognise the risk.
If an AI agent represents your company, then its answers effectively become part of your customer experience.
Incorrect information about price, delivery, refunds, subscriptions, or warranties could quickly become a commercial problem.
Businesses, therefore, need more than a chatbot.
They need accurate product data.
Clear policies.
Defined escalation procedures.
Brand guidelines.
Human intervention when necessary.
And strong limits on what the agent is authorised to promise.
This may also change how marketers measure advertising performance.
The important metric might no longer be only:
Did somebody click?
It could become:
How many meaningful conversations began?
Which questions prevented purchases?
Which objections appeared repeatedly?
Which conversations resulted in transactions?
Conversational commerce is not completely new.
Human commerce has always been conversational.
For centuries, customers walked into shops and asked questions before buying.
AI may simply be bringing the shopkeeper conversation back into digital commerce — except this time, it could happen simultaneously with millions of people.
