One of the most useful AI developments is not necessarily a more powerful model.
Sometimes, it is simply removing one annoying step from a workflow.
On September 17, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT is now available directly inside Microsoft Word.
The integration opens ChatGPT in a sidebar beside the document being edited. Users can draft from notes, summarise documents, revise selected text, reorganise sections, and adjust headings and formatting without continually moving between Word and a separate ChatGPT window.
That may sound like a small product update.
In practice, it addresses one of the biggest weaknesses of everyday AI productivity: context switching.
Consider a typical AI-assisted writing workflow.
You are writing a report in Word.
You copy three paragraphs.
You open ChatGPT.
You paste the paragraphs.
You explain what you want changed.
You copy the response.
You return to Word.
You paste it.
Then you repair the formatting.
Repeat that twenty times, and the supposedly intelligent workflow starts to feel remarkably manual.
Putting the AI inside the document changes that.
You can select a section and ask for a clearer explanation.
You can turn rough notes into a structured memo.
You can request an executive summary while the original document remains visible.
You can ask it to identify inconsistent terminology.
You can reorganise headings without rebuilding the document manually.
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Word is available across ChatGPT plans, including Free, although usage limits still depend on the user’s plan.
There is still an important rule:
AI-assisted writing requires human verification.
A beautifully written paragraph can still contain a factual error.
A summary can omit an important qualification.
Confidential or sensitive documents still require appropriate care.
But the direction of travel is becoming obvious.
AI is moving from being a separate destination — somewhere we go to ask questions — toward becoming a layer embedded inside the applications where work already happens.
The spreadsheet has AI.
The presentation has AI.
Now, the document has AI.
The most successful practical AI tools may eventually become almost invisible.
You will not think:
“I need to go and use AI.”
You will simply be working.
And the intelligence will already be there.
