Meta has spent years building some of the world’s largest free social platforms.
Now, it is building a much bigger subscription layer across them.
On September 15, Meta introduced Meta One, a subscription service combining expanded AI access, personalisation features, and professional tools across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI.
The main services remain free.
Meta One sits above that free layer with plans for individuals, AI power users, creators, and businesses.
For creators and businesses in particular, the strategy is interesting.
Meta says subscription features can include enhanced profiles, audience-development tools, analytics, publishing capabilities, greater access to Meta Business Agent, and additional AI functionality. Availability and pricing can vary by region and account.
This tells us something important about where social platforms are heading.
They are no longer competing, only to host your content.
They increasingly want to become the software you use to run the business surrounding your content.
A creator may traditionally have used one tool for editing, another for scheduling, another for analytics, another for customer communication, another for AI generation, and another for e-commerce.
Platforms now have an incentive to absorb as much of that workflow as possible.
Why?
Because attention creates advertising revenue.
But, professional tools create subscription revenue.
Once a creator builds an entire workflow inside one platform, leaving becomes much more difficult.
Creators should, therefore, evaluate subscription platforms carefully.
The question should not be:
“How many features do I get?”
The better questions are:
Does this replace another tool I already paid for?
Does it save measurable time?
Does it increase reach, conversion, or revenue?
Does it give me information I can actually use?
And importantly:
What parts of my business do I still own independently of the platform?
Owned websites, email lists, intellectual property, products, and customer relationships remain extremely valuable.
Social platforms can be powerful distribution engines.
They should not automatically become the entire business.
Meta One is, therefore, more than another premium subscription.
It represents the next stage of the platform economy:
Social networks are becoming operating systems for creators and small businesses.
