Google and the UK Government are moving AI climate research into live air-traffic operations with Operation Blue Skies, a trial designed to reduce warming aircraft contrails over the North Atlantic.
Contrails form when water vapour condenses around particles in aircraft exhaust. Google says warming contrails account for roughly one third of aviation’s total climate impact, making them a significant target even though they may appear harmless from the ground.
From individual flights to an airspace trial
Previous work showed that AI forecasts could identify contrail-sensitive regions and allow selected flights to make small route or altitude adjustments. Operation Blue Skies expands that idea from individual airline experiments to coordinated management across part of an oceanic corridor.
The 30-month programme will operate in the eastern half of North Atlantic Shanwick airspace, an area Google says represents approximately 5% of global contrail warming. It includes two operational trials lasting about four months each.
Around 10,000 flights will pass through the relevant airspace during annual trial hours. Only a small proportion predicted to create strongly warming contrails would be slightly diverted.
AI is one component of a human system

This structure matters because an accurate model alone cannot safely change aviation. Air-traffic controllers, weather experts, researchers and regulators must convert a prediction into an operational decision without compromising flight safety.
The climate benefit must be measured honestly
A detour can burn additional fuel, so the warming avoided by preventing a contrail must exceed the impact of the route change. Independent verification and satellite observation are therefore central to establishing whether the trial produces a genuine net benefit.
Google is participating pro bono and says it is contributing £1.4 million in AI expertise, engineering time and computing infrastructure. Government grant funding is directed to academic, nonprofit and aviation partners.
If the results hold at corridor scale, AI could help aviation reduce climate impact using existing aircraft rather than waiting for an entirely new fleet. Operation Blue Skies is therefore not only an AI story; it is a test of whether prediction, public infrastructure and human coordination can turn a solvable climate problem into routine operational practice.
