The global artificial-intelligence boom is colliding with a local political reality: data centres occupy land, consume electricity, require cooling and change the infrastructure priorities of the communities around them.
Reporting collected by The Guardian highlights public opposition to proposed AI data-centre developments, including concerns in East London. Residents question who receives the economic benefit, how much pressure projects place on electricity and water systems, and whether planning decisions are being accelerated without sufficient consent.
AI is physical infrastructure
The public experiences AI through a lightweight interface, but the underlying system is industrial. Large computing facilities require grid connections, backup power, fibre networks, cooling equipment, security zones and enormous capital commitments. The social cost becomes concentrated in particular places while the digital benefit is distributed globally.
Governments often present data centres as strategic assets that support jobs and technological independence. Communities may respond that construction employment can be temporary, permanent staffing relatively limited and environmental costs difficult to reverse.

Opposition should not be dismissed as anti-technology. It is feedback about poor distribution. The solution is to design data infrastructure that produces visible local value—renewable generation, grid upgrades, heat reuse, water responsibility, training and community ownership mechanisms.
A data centre cannot call itself intelligent if its relationship with the host community is unintelligent.
