Some of AI’s most prominent leaders are beginning to say humanity has entered the technological singularity.
One veteran AI builder is having none of it.
William Tunstall-Pedoe, a co-creator of Amazon’s Alexa and founder of UnlikelyAI, argues that if a true singularity happened, society would not need Silicon Valley executives to announce it.

His criticism targets the idea that current AI progress automatically equals a self-sustaining intelligence explosion.
What Current AI Can Do
Modern models are already superhuman in selected areas.
Machines outperform people at:
memory,
calculation,
searching vast knowledge,
some forms of coding,
specialised games.
But Tunstall-Pedoe argues that the crucial missing component is what he calls discovery intelligence: the ability to independently create and evaluate genuinely novel ideas at a level that continuously drives further scientific and technological advancement. �

The Singularity Has a Higher Bar
A genuine recursive intelligence explosion would mean AI improves AI, which then improves AI again—causing innovation to accelerate dramatically without depending on the same level of human direction.
We have pieces of that system.
AI helps researchers write code, analyse experiments, and discover mathematical results.
Humans still define objectives, construct laboratories, supply computing, and validate the work.
That is extremely important progress.
It is not necessarily the singularity.

I prefer the phrase:
We may be building the runway.
That is extraordinary enough.
We do not need to call every kilometre of technological acceleration the destination itself.
AI hype becomes dangerous when language outruns evidence.
The technology can be historically important without requiring us to declare science fiction completed ahead of schedule.
Conclusion
If a real intelligence explosion occurs, Tunstall-Pedoe’s argument is wonderfully simple:
Nobody will need to ask whether it happened.
We will be too busy living inside the consequences. �
