Microsoft Unveils AI Agents That Fight Cyberattacks at Machine Speed

Cybersecurity is entering a race in which both attackers and defenders can use artificial intelligence continuously. Microsoft says existing security systems—built around human-speed alerts and responses—cannot keep pace with machine-speed threats.

Its answer is Project Perception, an agentic security platform designed to observe risk, reason across complex digital environments and take defensive action while keeping people in control.

Three teams of AI agents

Project Perception coordinates three classes of specialised agents. Red-team agents search for possible paths an attacker could exploit. Blue-team agents investigate signals and decide which risks are meaningful. Green-team agents apply corrective actions and strengthen the environment.

Together they create a closed loop: discover, evaluate, repair and learn. The goal is not to generate more alerts for exhausted security teams. It is to improve protection continuously across identities, devices, applications, data, cloud systems and AI infrastructure.

Microsoft is using a multi-model strategy

The platform does not rely on one universal model. Microsoft says it combines frontier systems with specialised cybersecurity models so each task can use an appropriate balance of capability and cost.

For software vulnerabilities, Microsoft is introducing MAI-Cyber-1-Flash inside a multi-agent configuration called MDASH. The company reports a 96% any-crash score on the CyberGym benchmark and almost 50% lower cost than its current commercial configuration.

Those figures require independent real-world scrutiny, but the direction is clear: cybersecurity tools are evolving from passive monitoring into coordinated autonomous defence.

Human control remains essential

Machine-speed action creates its own risks. A defensive agent with broad permissions could interrupt legitimate services, misclassify behaviour or make rapid changes across an organisation. Oversight, audit logs, reversible actions and carefully limited authority are therefore as important as detection performance.

The cybersecurity contest is becoming asymmetric. AI lowers the cost of generating exploits and scaling attacks, but it also gives defenders the ability to analyse more signals than a human team could process alone.

Project Perception represents the emerging model: humans define objectives and boundaries while teams of specialised AI agents operate inside them. The future security centre may resemble less of an alert dashboard and more of a continuously learning digital immune system.
