ChatGPT Use Is Surging Across Africa as AI Moves From Asking to Doing

Artificial intelligence adoption is becoming more global, and Africa is among the regions closing the gap with early adopters. New country-by-country information from OpenAI shows how ChatGPT is shifting from a place where people ask questions into a tool they use to produce real work.

OpenAI says that in professional settings, people are more than twice as likely to use ChatGPT to complete a task or create something—such as writing, coding or analysis—than they are outside work.

Africa is part of the catching-up story

In the second quarter of 2026, parts of Africa, Latin America and Oceania increased their per-capita adoption rankings faster than many established markets. The data challenges the idea that advanced AI will remain concentrated permanently in wealthy early-adopter countries.

This matters because the impact of AI depends not only on who invents the models, but on how widely people can apply them. Entrepreneurs, students, researchers and creators in emerging markets can use the same general-purpose systems to reduce knowledge and production barriers.

Multimedia is growing fastest

OpenAI says multimedia generation, analysis and retrieval now account for 7.8% of messages and represent the fastest-growing global use case. Practical guidance, writing and information-seeking remain larger, but image and media workflows are rising steadily.

The change is significant for mobile-first societies. A person who communicates more naturally through voice, photographs or video may find multimodal AI more accessible than a text-only system designed around formal written English.

Adoption does not automatically create inclusion

Growth statistics can hide differences in affordability, connectivity, language coverage, digital skills and local relevance. A freemium layer is therefore not a minor marketing choice; it can determine whether AI becomes broad public infrastructure or another technology available mainly to people with disposable income.

Local creators and researchers must also shape the systems. If African users supply context but remain only consumers, the economic value and authority may still flow elsewhere. Genuine adoption means participating in application design, research, policy and business ownership.

OpenAI’s data points toward a distributed AI future. The next chapter will be judged not simply by how many messages come from Africa, but by how many livelihoods, companies and locally meaningful solutions those interactions help create.
