An AI Learning Portfolio Should Show How the Student Changed Their Mind

A finished assignment can hide the most interesting part of learning: the moment a student discovers that an explanation needs to change.

An AI learning portfolio could make that process visible. Instead of collecting only attractive outputs, students could preserve an initial attempt, a challenge to it and a revised explanation.

The portfolio proposed here is my practical application of that broader educational direction, not a UNESCO assessment template.

Begin before the tool answers

Ask the student to write a short initial explanation in their own words. It can be incomplete. Its purpose is to show the starting point.

Then invite the student to use an approved AI tool for a specific kind of help: a counterexample, a question or an alternative explanation. Follow the institution’s rules about permitted use and disclosure.

Keep the interaction that materially changed the work. A huge transcript is less useful than a carefully selected exchange accompanied by an explanation.

Show the revision

The student should identify what changed and why. “The AI said so” is not a sufficient reason. They should point to evidence, a calculation, a source or a clearer line of reasoning.

They can also reject a suggestion. A justified rejection may reveal more understanding than accepting every proposed improvement.

A portfolio entry might say: “I accepted the example because it exposed a gap, but rejected the conclusion because it did not follow from the evidence.”

Try a different situation

After the revision, ask the student to apply the idea to a fresh example. Keep the task proportionate and accessible.

This does not prove everything about learning. It gives the teacher another view of how the student is using the concept, beyond the quality of the final wording.

Assessment should allow different ways to explain reasoning where appropriate, including speech, diagrams or structured notes.

The educational value lies in making decisions visible: what the learner noticed, questioned, retained and changed.

A polished answer is one useful artefact. A thoughtful record of revision can show how that answer became the student’s own understanding.
