What to Do When You Have Outgrown an Old Goal

Some goals expire.

That can be difficult to admit, particularly when you have invested years pursuing them.

Maybe you wanted a particular career.

A certain lifestyle.

A business milestone.

A specific version of success.

Then one day you realise achieving it no longer excites you.

People sometimes continue pursuing outdated goals because stopping feels like failure.

But changing your mind after gaining new information is not necessarily failure.

Ask yourself three questions.

Do I still want the outcome?

Would I choose this goal again today?

Am I continuing because it matters—or because I have already invested so much?

Sometimes the answer will confirm that the goal remains worthwhile.

Other times it may reveal that you are living according to an older version of yourself.

Past effort is not automatically wasted.

Skills transfer.

Experience stays with you.

Lessons remain useful.

You are allowed to update the destination.
