A Humanoid Robot Just Ran 100 Metres in 8.86 Seconds—Faster Than Bolt’s Record

A Chinese humanoid robot has delivered the kind of result made for social media: Tiangong Ultra completed 100 metres in 8.86 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.

A striking benchmark

The time beats the 9.58-second human world record set by Usain Bolt, although robot and human performances are not directly comparable. The machine competes under different conditions, and speed alone does not equal human athletic ability.

Still, the result demonstrates fast progress in balance, power delivery, motion planning and control.

Why running is difficult for robots

Every stride requires continuous adjustment. A humanoid must manage impact, keep its centre of mass stable and recover from small errors before they become a fall.

That makes a sprint a stress test for hardware and software. Reports that the machine suffered minor damage also reveal the trade-off between headline speed and durability.

The commercial question

Factories and warehouses do not need robots to defeat Olympic champions. They need machines that can work safely, repeat tasks accurately and operate for long periods without expensive repairs.

The most valuable lesson from Tiangong may therefore be the control technology behind the run—not the comparison with Bolt.
