Artificial intelligence is steadily leaving the screen. Renesas has opened a Physical AI and Robotics Lab in Beijing, adding another major semiconductor company to the race to build intelligence for machines that operate in the physical world.
The company says the laboratory will focus on developing, demonstrating and validating next-generation robotic systems. That places it directly inside one of the fastest-growing areas of AI: embodied or physical intelligence.
What is physical AI?
Traditional AI works mainly with digital information: text, images, audio, code and data. Physical AI has to deal with gravity, friction, uncertainty, moving objects and unpredictable human environments.
A robot cannot simply produce a plausible answer. It must perceive the environment, decide what to do and move safely enough for the decision to matter.
Why semiconductor companies are moving closer to robotics
Robots require far more than a large AI model. They need processors, sensors, motor control, real-time operating systems, connectivity and power-efficient edge computing. That makes robotics a natural expansion market for semiconductor companies such as Renesas.
The more intelligence runs locally on a machine, the less the robot has to depend on a distant cloud server for every decision. Local processing can reduce latency and improve reliability in factories, vehicles, hospitals and homes.
China remains a critical robotics market
Locating the laboratory in Beijing is also significant. China has made humanoid robots, industrial automation and embodied AI strategic priorities, with a huge manufacturing base that gives developers opportunities to test robotic systems at scale.
That means the physical-AI race will not be decided only by who builds the smartest foundation model. It may also be decided by who can manufacture reliable bodies, sensors and control systems cheaply enough to deploy millions of machines.
MaryChuks analysis
For years, the public AI conversation has concentrated on chatbots. Robotics changes the economic equation because intelligence begins interacting directly with labour, logistics and physical infrastructure.
The companies that master the connection between AI models and real-world machines could create an entirely new computing platform. The smartphone put computing into our hands. Physical AI could put computing into the environment around us.
