Artificial intelligence has spent the last few years impressing the world with its ability to write, code, generate images and answer difficult questions. The next phase may be far more consequential.
OpenAI executives are warning that advanced systems are approaching a level of cybersecurity capability where attacks may no longer consist of a human asking a chatbot for occasional help. Future agents could potentially plan, adapt and continue cyber operations over extended periods.
Why persistence changes the risk
A chatbot answering a malicious question is dangerous. An autonomous system that can repeatedly analyse a network, adapt when an approach fails and continue towards a goal presents a different security problem. The concern is less a science-fiction “mastermind” than speed, scale and persistence.
AI agents could compress reconnaissance, code modification, vulnerability research and monitoring into a more automated workflow. That gives defenders new power too: the same models can inspect software, prioritise weaknesses and help incident-response teams act faster.
Containment must catch up with capability
As models operate for longer and use more tools, evaluation becomes harder. Tests must ask not only whether a model can produce a dangerous answer, but what happens when it can continue acting after that answer.
For organisations, preparation means limiting permissions, isolating sensitive systems, keeping reliable logs and ensuring a person can stop an automated process quickly. Strong multifactor authentication, prompt patching, dependable backups and staff verification procedures remain essential.
The defensive opportunity
AI could become one of cybersecurity’s strongest defensive tools. It can help find vulnerabilities people overlook and analyse suspicious activity at machine speed. The race is therefore not simply humans against AI; it is increasingly AI-assisted attackers against AI-assisted defenders.
Final thoughts
Greater capability creates greater responsibility. The most important race may not be to build the smartest model, but to make monitoring, control and defence improve just as quickly. That race has already begun.
