Meta has recruited prominent AI researcher Luke Metz for its Superintelligence Labs, according to Axios, adding another high-profile move to an increasingly aggressive talent contest.
Why individual researchers matter
Frontier research still depends on small groups with rare experience in training, evaluation and optimisation. One person can influence an architecture, safety method or research direction used across an enormous system.
Movement between laboratories
Researchers now move between companies, start-ups and new laboratories at remarkable speed. That circulation spreads ideas but also intensifies concerns about retention, confidentiality and cultural disruption.
Money is not the whole offer
Large compensation packages attract attention, but researchers also choose compute access, freedom, colleagues, leadership and the chance to shape products used at global scale.
The organisational risk
Recruiting stars does not automatically create a coherent laboratory. Teams need shared goals, strong infrastructure and an environment where disagreement improves decisions.
