Meta is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to detect scams and impersonation, with Poland becoming one of the latest markets to receive stronger protections.
The company says earlier AI-based systems reduced reports involving commonly impersonated public figures by more than 80%. The new protections are aimed at identifying fraudulent accounts, deceptive advertisements and impersonation tactics before they reach large numbers of users.
Why impersonation scams are becoming harder to spot
Online fraud has always relied on social engineering, but generative AI makes the problem more scalable. Criminals can now create convincing profile photographs, cloned voices, synthetic videos and personalized messages at very low cost.
A scam no longer has to look obviously fake. It can imitate a public figure, business owner, family member or customer-service representative with enough realism to make a user hesitate.
AI is becoming both the attack tool and the defence tool
This creates an unusual technological arms race. The same class of technology that helps criminals mass-produce convincing scams can also help platforms detect patterns across billions of accounts and interactions.
Machine-learning systems can compare account behaviour, advertising patterns, repeated images, suspicious links and networks of coordinated activity much faster than a human moderation team could investigate them individually.
The limits of automated detection
Meta’s reported reduction is significant, but no automated system can remove the need for user caution. Scammers constantly adapt to detection systems, and legitimate accounts can also be incorrectly flagged.
Platforms therefore need both stronger detection and transparent appeal systems. Security without due process can create a different problem when real creators or businesses lose access to accounts they depend on.

The most important development is that platform security is moving from reactive moderation toward predictive detection. Instead of waiting for thousands of people to report a scam, AI can look for the behavioural signature of a scam while it is forming.
That is the right direction, but accuracy and accountability have to grow together. The future of social-platform safety will depend on systems that are fast enough to stop fraud while still giving legitimate users a meaningful route to challenge mistakes.
