A phone can feel exhausting even when you are not actively using it. Every badge, vibration and lock-screen preview creates a tiny claim on attention.
Minutes 1–5: observe
Open notification settings and look at the full list of apps with permission. Notice which ones surprised you.
Minutes 6–15: remove
Turn off alerts from shopping, games, promotions and social features that do not require immediate action. Keep essential security, transport, school or care notifications.
Minutes 16–20: reduce visibility
For apps you still need, remove sounds, badges or lock-screen previews. An alert can remain available without becoming an interruption.
Minutes 21–25: create quiet periods
Set a sleep or focus mode that allows chosen people through. Test it so emergencies are not accidentally blocked.
Minutes 26–30: move temptations
Remove high-distraction apps from the home screen and decide when you will check them deliberately.
The rule going forward
When a new app asks for notification permission, treat the request as a negotiation. Access to your attention should be earned, not automatic.
