That gorgeous new singer with the mysterious biography and perfect photographs may have one small problem:
She does not exist. 🤣
Spotify says it will begin adding “AI Persona” badges to selected artist profiles from mid-September, giving listeners clearer information about whether the apparent performer behind the music is actually a human being.

The decision follows complaints about synthetic artist identities designed to resemble ordinary human musicians.
Artists can begin self-disclosing through Spotify for Artists, while visible labels are scheduled to start appearing next month. TechCrunch reports Spotify also plans to keep qualifying AI Persona material out of some recommendation surfaces.

Why This Matters
AI music has moved beyond generating songs.
It can now generate an entire celebrity package:
Stage name
Face
Biography
Album artwork
Voice
Social posts
Music catalogue
The listener may encounter what appears to be a new musician without realising the “person” is a synthetic brand.
That raises a different transparency issue from simply asking whether AI helped produce a song.
There are now two questions:
Was the music generated by AI?
And:
Is the artist themselves generated by AI?
The Recommendation Question Is Even Bigger
Spotify recommendations are extremely powerful distribution infrastructure.
If synthetic artists can produce songs at enormous volume and compete equally for algorithmic recommendations, they may overwhelm musicians who need days or months to create individual works.
Separating some AI persona music from recommendation systems could, therefore, become economically significant—not merely cosmetic.

Mary Chuks’ Perspective
This is the right direction.
AI characters can absolutely become part of entertainment. Fictional artists, virtual idols and CreativeVerse-style characters can be interesting forms of creativity.
But fiction needs a label when it is presented in a space where audiences reasonably expect a human performer.
The problem is not the AI singer.
The problem is making the listener believe the machine is a woman from Manchester who “started singing at age seven in her grandmother’s kitchen.” 🤣
Conclusion
AI-generated personalities are becoming businesses.
Spotify’s badge acknowledges a basic principle that will become increasingly important across the internet:
Synthetic does not have to mean deceptive.
