AI companies hide chain-of-thought reasoning to protect intellectual property and reduce dangerous information leaks. A new study suggests encryption alone may not be enough.
Researchers from the University of Tübingen, the Max Planck Institute and partner organisations describe a “decryption jailbreak” in a new paper, Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs.
The reported weakness is architectural. Encrypted reasoning blocks sent to a client can be reused across sessions and, within the same provider’s ecosystem, across models. The researchers found that a trace from a stronger model could be injected into a weaker, less protected model and prompted back into readable text.
Why hidden reasoning has value
A model’s intermediate reasoning can expose methods, sensitive context, system behaviour and clues about how advanced capabilities were produced. It may also reveal whether one system has learned from another. That makes reasoning traces both a safety asset and a commercial secret.
The wider lesson is familiar from cybersecurity: protecting the content is not enough if the surrounding protocol permits unsafe reuse. Every handoff—between model, client, session and tool—creates a trust boundary.
What builders should do now
AI platforms need session binding, model-specific validation, strict replay controls and stronger separation between model tiers. Enterprise users should treat reasoning metadata as sensitive data, not harmless technical exhaust.
