The animated flourish looks elegant in its designer’s preview. In your video editor, a dark rim appears around the pale lettering. The background is transparent, the animation plays and the file opens without an error. Yet the asset is not ready for your programme.
That situation deserves a more precise response than “remove the background again”. Motion graphics can carry transparency while the receiving application interprets their colour information incorrectly. For independent creators commissioning title animations, decorative overlays or reusable video elements, agreeing how that information travels is part of approving the work.
The soft edge is where the disagreement becomes visible
Adobe’s After Effects footage-interpretation guidance, updated on 27 March 2026, distinguishes straight, or unmatted, channels from premultiplied, or matted, channels. Both carry an alpha channel, but the colour channels differ. In the premultiplied case, semi-transparent colour information is affected by a background colour.
Adobe illustrates a premultiplied asset developing a black halo when interpreted as straight. Using the appropriate premultiplied interpretation and specifying the black matte removes that illustrated halo. This establishes one possible explanation for an unwanted edge; it does not establish the cause of every fringe in a delivered animation.
The practical question is therefore two-sided: how was the asset exported, and how is the receiving editor interpreting it? A file can be suitable for the job while its import settings need correction. Conversely, changing import settings cannot be assumed to repair artwork whose unwanted outline is already part of the design.
Give the supplier a concrete placement to work towards
Imagine a fictional publisher, Ada, commissioning a short animated feather for a poetry-reading video. The feather has a pale body, fine gold lines and a soft fading tip. It must sit above both a navy opening shot and a bright page-turning sequence.
Ada’s brief should identify the fading tip as intentional. Asking for a harder cut-out might hide a fringe while damaging the commissioned appearance. The wanted result is a soft transition that behaves correctly when composited over the agreed footage.
Send the designer representative backgrounds, the intended editor and the required frame dimensions and frame rate. Ask for a short sample using the proposed delivery settings before approving the complete animation. This is a proposed commissioning method, not a report of a file exported or tested for this article.
A sample lets both parties discuss the same visible feature. “A dark rim appears around the fading tip on the bright shot” gives the supplier somewhere specific to investigate. “The transparency is broken” could describe several different failures.
Specify the codec as well as the filename
Apple’s April 2022 ProRes white paper identifies ProRes 4444 and ProRes 4444 XQ as supporting an optional alpha channel. It distinguishes these from the ProRes 422 family, which does not support alpha. Within that codec family, simply asking for “a ProRes file” leaves an important choice unresolved.
Treat that as a compatibility requirement to agree with the recipient. Ada could ask whether the receiving workflow accepts a ProRes 4444 movie with alpha, rather than prescribing it without checking. Support for the codec and the practical ability to use the delivered asset should both be confirmed.
The approved specification should name the chosen encoding and whether the file is intended as a reusable overlay or a finished composition. A flattened preview can communicate the desired appearance, but Ada should know which supplied file to place above her own footage.
Carry the export choice into the import
Adobe’s rendering and exporting guidance, also updated on 27 March 2026, documents RGB+Alpha as the output-channel choice for including alpha, subject to codec support. It separately offers Straight (Unmatted) and Premultiplied (Matted) colour options.
For Ada’s handover, ask the designer to record the option used. If the delivery is premultiplied, include the matte colour. The recipient then has a stated interpretation to compare with the editor’s behaviour, rather than a collection of settings to change at random.
In After Effects, Adobe documents the interpretation controls under File > Interpret Footage > Main. Straight and Premultiplied are explicit choices; the premultiplied setting includes a background-colour selection. Use the supplier’s information and a controlled comparison when investigating a mismatch.
If a change improves one edge but damages another, stop and return to the source settings with the designer. Keep the original delivery available. The aim is to explain the discrepancy and preserve the intended artwork, rather than accumulate undocumented fixes.
Review the animation through its difficult moments
A still frame with an opaque centre is a weak approval sample for a soft animated overlay. For the fictional feather, I would ask Ada and her editor to review the delivered sample in the receiving project using these checks:
- Place it over both agreed backgrounds. Examine the pale body, fine gold lines and fading tip separately.
- Play the complete movement. Include its entrance, any motion blur, its fade and the last visible frames.
- Inspect the troublesome edge closely. Then return to the size at which viewers will actually watch.
- Compare the stated alpha interpretation. Record the receiving setting and any correction that was necessary.
- Export a short finished composite. Reopen that output and check that the approved appearance survives delivery.
These are editorial acceptance suggestions. No receiving application, codec implementation or video export was tested for this article. A supplier’s demonstration should use the actual tools and settings involved in the commission.
MaryChuks.com’s guide to transparent PNG delivery covers a related still-image problem: distinguishing a genuinely reusable transparent asset from a preview that merely looks suitable on one background. For motion graphics, add the alpha interpretation and the behaviour across time.
Make approval reproducible for the next editor
A concise delivery note for Ada could identify the approved filename, codec, alpha convention, matte colour where relevant, frame specifications and receiving application used for review. Attach the short approved composite as a visual reference, clearly distinguished from the reusable overlay.
If another editor joins the project, that information gives them a starting point for reproducing the result. If the artwork later changes, repeat the relevant review on the new export rather than transferring approval by filename.
A useful motion-graphics handover preserves both the creative intention and the conditions under which it was checked. The soft feather should remain soft, the intended colours should remain recognisable and the recipient should be able to explain the import settings that make the result work.
