One look at Luca Trapanese reveals an adoring father who adores his daughter, Alba. And when you learn about the remarkable circumstances that brought them together, it presents a compelling case for fate.
She was rejected by 20 families
Trapanese, a gay guy residing in Naples, Italy, had long desired to start a family. Trapanese’s dream appeared to be dashed when he and his long-term partner split up. Then Alba entered his life. Trapanese received a call from an adoption agency in 2017 informing him that he had been connected with a newborn girl with Down Syndrome. Trapanese had fallen in love with Alba after being rejected by 20 other families.

Trapanese adoption of Alba was no small effort, given Italy’s harshest policies in Europe. Surrogacy is prohibited, and gay parents are not permitted to be named as co-parents on birth certificates. On a case-by-case basis, even single parents are considered for adoption. “I was told that I would only be assigned a child who had a disease, a significant impairment, or behavioral issues,” he explained. “I was perfectly fine with that.”

Trapanese seems to have spent his entire life waiting for Alba. He began volunteering to aid critically sick people and children living with one disability or the other, after losing his best buddy to cancer when he was 14 years old.
