The Basque artist Andoni Bastarrika is known for creating sculptures of animals from wet beach sand that are so realistic that they appear to have just emerged from the water. Despite the fact that Bastarrika doesn’t just create animals (creating a sand mermaid for his daughters is actually what got him started down this specific route more than ten years ago), he draws his inspiration in the freedom and strength that animals stand for.

Bastarrika gathers enormous piles of wet sand, forms them with his hands, and then contours them with a sharpened stick. He periodically adds color and other details from found things like glass, ashes, and clay powder. Depending on the kinds of project he want to do,  each work can take up to two to three days.
