Artist – Debra Bernier from Victoria, Canada creates stunning sculptures of mystical beings out of driftwood and other natural materials like shells, coral, feathers, crystals, and stones.
I never start with a clean slate when I work with driftwood. The waves and wind have carved sculptures into each individual piece of driftwood. I try to imagine the wood’s journey as I hold it in my hand because the wood tells a story. I alter the already-existing curves and contours to create recognizable animal or human face shapes. The finished works reflect not only my life, that of my family and kids, but also the enduring, sacred bond that all humans have with nature.
