Tomas Barcelo, a Spanish sculptor, uses resin and repurposed materials to produce fusion sculptures of the retro and the futuristic. These ancient-styled, steampunk sculptures have an alien or unearthly appearance. At first, Tomas made sculptures out of clay, Lego, and cardboard, but starting in 2014, he began using resin and recycled materials to explore his ideas. He states, “For too long, I used to be focused only on the language of sculpture, and I forgot the content,” and that sculpture is very successful because it shares space and time with the audience. Sculpture is a form of contemporary art that attracts viewers from its immediate surroundings. Tomas has given the uncommon futuristic relics a life.
